Varda tells us that she takes photos of people so that they will not “fall down the holes in [her] memory.” … The idea that the photographic portrait sits in a liminal space between remembering and forgetting is nothing new. In Camera Lucida, Roland Barthes famously quoted Kafka’s comment that “we photograph things in order to drive them out of our minds.”
