Surface and WAIT are part of a series of plaster casts of cardboard storage boxes [Rachel Whitehead] made between 2004 and 2006…. She started the project while packing up and moving the contents of her mother’s home, and began to think about how the outside of an old box—its shape, the color and imprint of logos, etc.—can evoke particular emotions and memories in one person but to someone else remains completely anonymous….
Whiteread’s work has close ties to the formal aesthetics of Minimalism; however, instead of pursuing pure abstract form, she fills her work with references to personal history.
