[Ray Johnson] didn’t relate to people as one would normally relate to somebody else, accepting people for what they are, being interested in what they do, reacting to it, offering something of yourself. He didn’t do that. You know, now that I think of him more, after his death, I don’t—I don’t think I really knew who he was. It’s very hard for me to say that, but who was this man? He kept so much of himself to himself. I think it was a kind of game, his whole life was a kind of game, like his work.
